Presidents Corner

Year number 3 for Firelands Fly Fish= ers is starting already. The Trout fishing of summer is winding down and giv= ing way to thoughts of Steelhead in the Lake Erie tributaries. The Board of Directors has been busy planning the year s= o we have quality fly fishing programs for our meetings.

There is a 3 part fly fishing class = that meets on Sept 6, 20 and 27 at Sandy Ridge. This p= rogram is an excellent introduction to fly fishing for the beginner and a great refresher course for the neophyte. The class was advertised in the Pl= ain Dealer Friday magazine and the response has been outstanding, we have 12 new fly fishers signed up for the class. If you are willing to help teach= the class, please call me.

We have a clam bake scheduled for Oc= t. 20 at Beaver Creek Boat Club in L= orain as a social function, open house for new members and great food. More information about the clambake will be in this newsletter and on the web site. Mark the date and join us for a great evening.

The September meeting will have Ara Hamamjian as the speaker. Ara gave a presentation on fly tying at a meeting 2 years ago. Ara will give a Steelhead fishing presentation: Fly line choices-double taper and running lines. Rigging: Floats, split shot, leaders, flies, and knots. Rods: Applications, different weights and lengths. Ara is not only an accomplished fly tier but an outstanding Steelhead guide. The FFF is registered in this prog= ram (for free) and as a result gives new prospects and active supporters alike a fun way to support the FFF mission.

If you list an item for sale on eBay= , you can choose to donate a percentage to the FFF using the MissionFish popup wi= ndow. You register with MissionFish, selecting a percentage of the final value th= at you want donated to the FFF. Then, you complete the item that you are listi= ng on eBay.

The item you list will appear with a= n eBay Giving Works icon, the benefiting nonprofit, in this case the FFF, and the donation percentage designated. When the listing ends, the buyer pays the seller, and the seller ships the item to the buyer as usual. The seller then pays the donation to the MissionFish. = Rocky River Stream Gage is Operation= al

It was noted in the June issue of The Indicator that the Firelands Fly Fishers club had made a donation of $2= 50 to the installation of a stream gage on the Rocky River. The gage is now installed and operational.

Utilizing this real time data can be= great tool for any steelhead fisherman. With unpredictable weather patterns, rain, snow and different flows = for different rivers in the Lake Erie region= , this information can save you time and help you understand where the fish are. Also contributing to the project w= ere Cleveland Metroparks, Trout Unlimited, USGS, Central Basin Steelheaders and= NE OH Sewer District.

The Firelands Fly Fishers are hostin= g a clambake on October 20, 2006 at the Beaver Creek Boat Club. Tickets w= ill be sold for $25 per person, which includes a clambake, beer and soda. More information regarding tickets and maps to the boat club will be availa= ble at the September 13th membership meeting.&= nbsp; Beaver Creek Boat Club is at 6099 W. Erie Ave. in Lorain, we will convene in the club hou= se.

= List of materials:=

Body: Fox squirrel tail

Wings: Turkey tail feather

Eyes: Plastic bead chain<= /span>

Legs: Ostrich feather

Thorax/head: Dark color dubbing=

# 1. Start your thread and loc= k it onto the hook shank leaving the working end near the bend.

# 2. Stack a 1/4" wide bu= ndle of squirrel tail hair and tie it in with the tips just past the hook bend. Wrap the   th= read up the hair to the hook eye.

# 3. Double the hair back over= the top and tie it down smooth to the shank to create thickness to the body.&nb= sp;

# 4. Trim off the excess lengt= h of the doubled hair.

# 5. Tie in the bead chain eyes. Substitute mono with burned tips.

# 6. Tie in the Turkey = tail wings over the sides of the back. Secure to body with a drop of clear adhes= ive.

# 7. Tie in the legs. Sh= ort sections tied in an overhand knot for the front legs and long doubled over ostrich for the rear legs. Substitute rubber legs for ease.
