A very productive and busy year is coming to a close with the picnic on June 14.  We have had weekly fly tying sessions at Vermillion Reservation a= nd at Sandy = Ridge. These sessions have attract= ed not only new fly tyers but also experienced tyers. Now that the weather is warmer we also have ha= d fly casting sessions on the same nights-not only learn how to tie a fly but
also cast the fly at the same session. You donâ&= #8364;™t have to tie fly or cast to join the group- a few people are there for the f= un of it and the BS sessions. The coffee pot is always on.

 

Sandy Ridge is an outstanding facility and is frequented by many bird watchers.  Any suggestions for topics for the Tuesday sessions are greatly appreciated.   Are th= ere any members out there willing to share a favorite fly recipe at one of these sessions??? Please consider doing this.

 

At the rain shortened May casting meeting, the current slate of officers are unopposed so their election is assured.

 

The end of the year picnic is on June 14 at Vermillion but the location is at t= he pavilion across the river by the barn. The picnic offers good food, companionship, stories about the Penns Creek tr= ip and the biggest raffle of the year. In the words of Joe Sl= oboda “do you need more tickets?” Support the club by buyi= ng and selling more tickets, the prizes are extraordinary and the ticket sales will provide a lot of the funding for next year.

 

This year, as last year ended very quickly. The year was very productive and the club started many new educational sessions to help promote fly fishing. This was possible due to the hard work of many members. Thanks to everyone for a= ll their efforts. I’m looking forward to continuing all we have started in the fall.

Editors notes

 

The Club has made a donation of $250 toward a stream gauge on the Rocky River which should be in place by= the Fall Steelhead Season. This should greatly help those who look for on-line = data on the flow and fishing conditions on the river.

 

Our group is growing. To date we have approximately 60 paid members. To make it fair for all Firelands members the board has se= t up some guidelines on future events.   Meetings and events are open = to all paid members.  Those members may invite a guest to attend once wit= hout charge to see what we are all about. Additional visits, when a  paid speaker is scheduled, will require an admi= ssion fee of $10.00 for non members. We will have a sign-in sheet before all our Wednesday evening general meetings to keep a better track of attendance.

 

Part of my new duties for next Fall will be to help coordinate a major annual fundraiser that would bring in needed operating revenue without totally depending on the membership. The board is looking at the possibility of putting a one day seminar on.  More on this in the September issue.

 

I recently sent out an indicator update on the issue of us getting involved w= ith the Healing Waters program put on by the Federation. If you would like to participate and haven’t don= e so, please contact Dave Snyder at ohio= fly@ameritech.net   If we have enough interest, it would become an ongoing part of our program.=

The RS2 is a consistent winner when the trout become picky in all colors. The tail is tied on over a light winding of thread with a pair of microfibetts split ( fine = nylon paint brush bristles will also work) so they extend slightly more than the = hook length beyond the bend. Dub a robust abdomen to 3/4 of the way forward to t= he hook eye. Tie on one CDC feather as a wing and finish with a small patch of dubbing ahead of the feather for the head.
