Presidents Corner…

I am thril= led at the reception the fly tying classes have received, a lot of time and effort have gone into making the fly tying successful. Tom = Zmina is doing an outstanding job as the Director of = Fly Tying. The Saturday morning fly tying breakfast of March 11 was outstanding= . We had more than a dozen people with 6 who had never tied before. They receive= d an introduction to fly tying and tied their first Wooly Bugger. These sessions= not only introduce people to fly tying but also give the club a good source of = new members. This really shows one of the purposes of the club, education. The Thursday night fly tying sessions at Mill Hollow have been well received al= so; everyone now needs good weather to use all the flies they have tied. There = is a fly tying session scheduled for April 11 at the Elyria Library from 5 pm to 8:30 pm. The Thursday sessions continue at Sandy Ridge park on Case Rd on Tuesday nights in May.=

Dues remin= ders were sent to all members who have not paid there 2006 dues for Firelands Fly Fishers. If you have any questions plea= se contact Brent Fereone, membership chair. Also w= e are a 100% Federation of Fly Fishers Club which means that anyone who is a Firelands Fly Fishers member must be a member of the Federation of Fly Fishers. The Federation renewals are sent to each member = from the Federation. There seem to be some who have not renewed there FFF membership. Don’t you just hate it when someone keeps mentioning money.

We have cl= ub t-shirts thanks to the efforts of Jim Walend an= d Dave Snyder. The t-shirts are 12.00 each. Jim is also the club Librarian/Histori= an, which means he has all the club videos that members can borrow. We should h= ave a list of videos available at the April meeting.

Election of officers will be at the May meeting. A nominations chairperson will be in charge of getting candidates for the offices. If you are interested in runn= ing for an office, please let me or the nominations chairperson know this at the next meeting.

Dave Snyde= r and I attended the Great Lakes Council meeting on March 19 in Warren ,Mi. The Great Lakes Council has many items they are currently worki= ng on concerning lawsuits about fishing rights of certain Indian Tribes in Michigan. Topics= of concern to Ohio were very few, mainly talking about when the Ohio Sub Council is going to separate from the Great Lakes Council and become the Ohio State Council.

I think we= all enjoyed the presentation by Dick Walle. For fut= ure thought and reference, some things to remember with soft hackle tying tips.=

- A soft h= ackle hare's ear is the most effective wet fly
- On any soft hackle fly- copper wire is the best rib
- Soft hackle Sulphur(read Penn's Creek) Thorax of Sulphur dubbing, with a Pheasant tail body

with a = Copper rib
- During the Early Trout Season-a yellow body soft hackle is the most effec= tive because most

flies are yellow at this time of the year.

I recently received a mailing from the Federation office. Monthly updates that may or may no= t be included in the Federation Magazine will be available along with articles s= ent in by other clubs on the Club Wire<= /i>. I will try to include some of that information for our Indicator each month. = The March issue has info about the 1^st Annual FFF International Fly Tying Competition, Striped Bass Fish proposals, DVD and Book reviews and suggestions on fly fishing with droppers or fishing from a Kayak. Secure eye= s to top of hook with a figure eight wrap. Wrap thread towards the eye of the ho= ok. Attach white bucktail in front of dumbbell eye,= wrap thread behind the eye. Bring white bucktail ove= r the dumbbell eye and secure with several wraps. Bring thread back to the eye of= the hook. Attach Krystal Flash at eye of hook only. Attach chartreuse bucktail at eye only. Build u= p a thread head, whip finish and cement.

The Federa= tion of Fly Fishers (FFF) has announced an affiliation with the Internet radio s= how Ask About Fly Fishing (AAFF), with a goal to increase membership and advance its educational and conservation programs.
